Find Jesus, Find Joy

Find Jesus, Find Joy

We’re all plagued by hectic schedules, tight deadlines, unwanted competition and the struggle to stay sane through it all. How does one find joy amidst all the mental clutter, you ask? Well, it’s fairly simple. The trick is to find Jesus. This may sound like lofty advice, but let me backtrack a bit and paint you a picture.

Not very long ago, I caught myself feeling like I was stuck in a rut. Stepping out of bed was a challenge every morning, knowing that I would spend the next eight hours glued to a desk doing work that didn’t bring me happiness. My day was spent in either complaining about my to-do list or scouring for better job opportunities on the internet. Before I realised it, this became a routine that I was trapped in and I couldn’t find my way out of the negativity even if I tried. And boy, did I try!

I was convinced that nothing could shake the gloom of monotony off me, till one day, during Church, this particular verse made me pause to reflect:

“Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” -- Genesis 28:15.

As I meditated over the verse, I was comforted by the reassurance of God. It was His plan for me to be in this place at this time, and it is He alone who would see me through it. The realisation dawned on me that I had been so focused on waiting for my job to bring me joy that I had forgotten how I could bring joy to my job. The verse above is my constant reminder that finding happiness in the mundane or menacing periods isn’t up to me alone. God is with me, holding my hand, walking me through all the hurdles and setbacks that come my way.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be scorched, nor will the flame burn you.” -- Isaiah 43:2.

From that day on, I decided to try a different routine. I won’t step down from my bed without first acknowledging the presence of the Lord in each new day. I follow this up with a simple phrase, “Lord, surprise me today!” And He sure does! Just knowing that God is at work in my life gets me excited about the day. I can’t wait to see what He has in store for me now, the people that He brings into my life and even the challenges that He wonderfully see me through.

“You have turned my mourning into dancing for me;
You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.” -- Psalm 30:11

It is as simple as that! All I needed to do was put on my spiritual glasses and find Jesus in everything that was happening to me. Whether those happenings align with my plans or set me on a different path, whether the people I encounter make life easy for me or teach me patience and kindness, whether the day has exciting things in store for me or nothing substantial happens at all, I’ve learnt to just keep trusting the Lord as I walk along. And in trusting Him I found what I didn’t know I was looking for. In trusting Him I found joy.
